Our verdict

American Hartford Gold is the only company we checked that publishes its markup ranges in writing. That honesty is worth something, and the numbers are worth reading closely: 1% to 19.99% on bullion, up to 39.99% on its exclusive and semi-numismatic coins, and up to 59.99% on certain numismatic coins. Its reps are paid on commission.

It has a low $10,000 IRA minimum, names two custodians and four depository companies, and holds an A+ BBB rating with a 4.8 on Trustpilot. Against that, it had 115 BBB complaints in three years, the most on our list, and doesn’t publish its setup or admin fees.

If you go with American Hartford Gold, stick to plain bullion coins and bars and ask for the exact spread on each one.

Markups: what the agreement says

American Hartford Gold’s Shipping and Transaction Agreement (September 2026) defines the spread as the difference between the retail price quoted to you and the price it pays its wholesaler. It says the spread may differ between customers and transactions, and may be negotiable. On the date of the agreement:

Product typeSpread
Bullion1.00% to 19.99%
AHG exclusive and semi-numismatic coinsUp to 39.99%
Certain numismatic coinsUp to 59.99%

The agreement doesn’t say whether the percentage is measured against the price you pay or the dealer’s cost. On a $50,000 purchase:

  • At 1%, roughly $500 goes to the dealer either way.
  • At 19.99%, about $10,000 if it’s a share of your price, or about $8,300 if it’s a markup on cost.
  • At 59.99%, about $30,000 or about $18,700. Either way, gold would have to rise a long way before you broke even.

The agreement itself puts it plainly: to make a profit you must be able to sell for more than your initial investment, including the spread.

Other dealers have markups too. They just don’t publish them. Use our calculator with the spread your rep quotes.

Fees

American Hartford Gold’s investment guide lists storage at $110 a year commingled or $160 segregated, billed with the annual IRA fee. It doesn’t publish the setup or annual admin fee. Its gold IRA page says only that setup fees “may” apply and depend on the custodian and depository. Its FAQ says fees vary with account size and that “the storage might be free” for some accounts.

The page names Equity Trust as custodian. Equity Trust’s public precious-metals schedule is $50 to set up and $125 a year, but American Hartford Gold doesn’t say that schedule applies to its customers, so we haven’t put those numbers in our tables. Ask for the custodian’s fee schedule before you sign.

Other fees from its agreement:

  • 3% fee if you pay by card
  • No liquidation fees on buybacks
  • Free insured shipping to the depository

A competitor’s comparison page quotes American Hartford Gold as offering free setup and up to five years of free storage. We didn’t see that on American Hartford Gold’s own pages, so we haven’t counted it. Ask for any waiver in writing.

Company news

In October 2026 American Hartford Gold announced that it had acquired Rosland Capital’s assets and set up a service line for Rosland clients. It said it is not taking on Rosland’s liabilities. Rosland is not on our list.

Minimum investment

$10,000 for a gold IRA, per its FAQ and investment guide. It didn’t publish a minimum for cash purchases.

Custodians and storage

American Hartford Gold works with two custodians, Equity Trust Company and The Entrust Group, and these depositories:

  • Delaware Depository (Wilmington, Delaware; Boulder City, Nevada)
  • International Depository Services (Dallas, Texas)
  • A-Mark Global Logistics (Las Vegas, Nevada; Irving, Texas)
  • Brink’s Global Services (Los Angeles; Salt Lake City)

Products

Gold, silver and platinum. It didn’t publish a list of IRA-eligible products on the pages we checked. Its exclusive and semi-numismatic coins carry the higher spread ranges above.

Buyback and cancellation

  • Buyback: It advertises a buyback commitment with zero liquidation fees. Its agreement says the law prevents it from guaranteeing it will buy back.
  • Cancellation: Its about page offers a 7-day cancellation window: return the metal unused for a full refund with no restocking fee. The transaction agreement describes this satisfaction guarantee as applying to non-bullion transactions and requires notice by phone and email, so ask whether your order is covered.

Promotions

Its homepage advertises up to $15,000 in free silver. The terms aren’t published there. A bonus paid out of a high-spread product can cost you more than it gives.

Ratings and complaints

  • BBB: A+, accredited since June 2, 2016. 115 complaints in three years, 42 closed in the last 12 months.
  • BCA: AAA, 5 complaints, member since June 2015.
  • Trustpilot: 4.8 from 1,954 reviews.

115 complaints is the highest count among the companies we rank. Read a sample of recent ones and the company’s replies.

  • Mathys v. The Hartford Gold Group, LLC (N.D. Ill., No. 1:20-cv-03927) alleged fraud and misrepresentation. On December 7, 2020 the court sent the case to arbitration under the customer’s agreement and closed the court case. Arbitration results aren’t public, so we don’t know how it ended.
  • McDougall v. The Hartford Gold Group (C.D. Cal., No. 2:23-cv-03912) was a TCPA case over marketing calls, filed in May 2023. Case-tracking sites report that both sides agreed to dismiss it in May 2024. We couldn’t see the dismissal entry on the public docket, and no settlement terms are public.

We found no FTC, CFTC or state regulatory action against American Hartford Gold. Claims elsewhere of an FTC penalty are unsupported, and we haven’t repeated them.
